What is Speech Mapping?

Hearing tests just got better

At various centres throughout England & Wales, hearing aid audiologists from Regional Hearing Services, on selected days throughout the year, are using speech mapping equipment – a more effective way to carry out routine hearing tests

Hearing Tests that map speech patterns

Speech mapping takes the process of a conventional hearing test a stage further. Instead of assessing your ability to hear artificial tones and noises, Speech Mapping uses realistic signals such as speech from those around you and music. Studies suggest that this can reduce uncertainties in results and lead to a more correct diagnosis of your hearing loss, and prescription on how best to treat it.

Extra features for accurate hearing assessment

For best results we strongly recommend that all our volunteers are accompanied by someone with whom they regularly converse because they too, can participate. With the help of the hearing loss simulator they will be able to experience what hearing loss is like. Additionally, with the hearing instrument simulator they will experience the benefit of amplification, especially for someone who has never worn a hearing aid. These combined, can show the benefits of the hearing aid to the relative of the person being tested. As a result, they are able to experience what you have been missing and both parties appreciate the joys of clearer hearing. If you are an existing hearing aid wearer we can check that your hearing aid is still addressing your hearing loss, and how much of the speech reaching your hearing aid actually reaches your eardrum.

Who Qualifies for Speech Mapping?

We invite hearing aid wearers, who feel that you are still experiencing problem. We also invite people who have or think you have a hearing loss but do not wear hearing aids. It helps if someone comes with you on the day as this improves the results.

Based on the results, any advice you seek, requests for the options open to you, recommendations and solutions, is free of charge with no obligation to take up any of the course of action available.

How to volunteer for Speech Mapping near to you

The technology required to conduct hearing tests using Speech Mapping is not widely available.

For that reason, Regional Hearing Services decided to bring this to local centres throughout England & Wales on pre-arranged days.
